The changes to the October Building regulations have placed a particular burden on small joinery companies.
The new regulations require either the thermal performance of a window be rated and given a Window Energy Rating minimum ‘C’ banding or a whole unit U-value rating.
The timber window product is more bespoke in nature. The WER route is more onerous and costly for a bespoke joinery company to achieve. The joinery company would need to make a window to submit for air leakage testing, a time consuming and potentially expensive burden; as well as simulate the thermal performance of the window.
Customers buying timber windows want timber windows over alternate materials and as long as they meet the Building Regulation requirements a WER rating is not a marketing advantage to joinery companies, the visual appearance of the window is the primary concern.

Our U-Value calculations are fully in accordance with the Requirements of the new Building Regulations. The external audit carried out by the Thermal Rating Register and the U-Value calculations we provide will fully demonstrate compliance with Part L thermal performance of windows and doors.
Most joinery companies also fit at least a percentage of the windows they manufacture, so we have provided special pricing for companies who also join the Certass Competent Persons scheme, although this is not a requirement, it will save you and your customers money.
